Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljanski grad)
Ljubljana Castle is a symbol of the Slovenian capital and one of the most interesting points of the city. Just a few minutes from the city center, it represents the cultural center of the city. The castle is a mighty medieval fortress with the Watchtower Clock Tower dominating over the city. Throughout its long history, the purpose of this fortress has changed, and today the castle serves as a cultural hub.
The castle also functions as a museum with a permanent historical exhibition. You can reach it by foot or take a cable car ride that offers an exceptional view of the entire city. The surroundings are open to visitors, while there is an entrance fee to the fortress. Ljubljana Castle hosts numerous concerts, exhibitions, and theatre performances.
Interestingly, in the basement of Erasmus Tower in the 15th century, there was a prison for nobility. Traces left by prisoners can still be seen on the walls of this dungeon. Among the traces, you can see the coat of arms of Erasmus of Lueg, known in Slovenian tradition as Erazem Predjamski.
Monument to the Peasant Revolt
Near the fortress, there is a monument called "Monument to the Peasant Revolt," by sculptor Stojan Batic and architect Vladimir Braco Music. The work depicts the peasant rebellion against the nobility and feudal oppression in 1573.
Next to the fortress, there is a café-bar where you can enjoy a refreshing drink with a panoramic view of almost the entire Ljubljana. If you decide to visit this place on foot, it will take you a 10-15 minute walk.
